Is there anything better than a free cookbook? Actually yes, I can think of quite a few things. Free food, being one. Free beer to go with that free food would make a great follow-up. And temperatures below 90 coming in a close third. But still, free cookbooks are really nice, and especially when they’re as well designed and as thoughtfully put together as these are. Not only are both of these particular ones full of interesting dinner ideas, but both held (for me, at least) the added benefit of making me think about what I eat; about being very intentional about how you cook and why cooking is important.

The first up is bit of an unlikely contribution, as it comes from the world of Icelandic music. Jónsi & Alex are a duo blending both organic and electronic instruments into very mellow, ambient and beautiful music. (Jónsi is also lead vocalist and multi-instrumentalist with the band Sigur Rós, as well as a solo artist with his deut album Go.) But that’s just what they do to pay for their food habit. Both guys are committed raw food enthusiasts, and they’ve decided to share the love by putting together their own recipe booklet entitled “The Good Heart Recipe Book.” You can flip through it online, or download your own pdf copy on their website. They’ve also put together a few cooking videos on that page, so give it a look. (And check out their album, Riceboy Sleeps, for some lovely cooking music.)

Now that you’ve enjoyed something raw, do you also want to put the “cook” back into cooking? The StoneSoup blog has published a very attractive downloadable cookbook with an emphasis on low-fuss, minimal meals. The goal of the recipes is that each item can be made with five ingredients or less, and prepared in ten minutes or less. Now that’s our kind of cooking! Although a lot of the items in the starter section border on common sense, things quickly progress into something more inspired. And the excellent photographs succeed in making even the simplest fare seem seductive.

Both of these have pictures that make me hungry and recipes that make me want to hop in the kitchen. And hey, they’re both priced to move, so enjoy food! Do it now!

Gourmet TodayWhen last we left you, I teased a new feature/series/focus for the website related to a new cookery book of almost mythic girth. A thousand-page testament to food on paper that we would not only use in exercise by simply picking up, but also something that we would be cooking from. And I’m here to tell you a little bit more about that.

The title in question is a lime-green offering by the name of Gourmet Today. And oddly enough, it arrived on my doorstep just a handful of days after its namesake magazine closed its doors…

Call To Action

Ok, in order to get this blog started off right, I think we need to begin by issuing a call to action.

If you’re reading this site, it probably means one of two things: (1) you know one or both of us personally, find us both physically and mentally irresistible, and would therefore probably read any site that we started, be it for competitive yoga or minutia on historical tantric chant; or (2) you are interested in food and cooking. We’re going to assume that most of you are in the latter group, mainly for tax purposes.

Which leaves us with food. I like to think that we’re all food lovers here, and as such we should have some interest in spreading that excitement around a little…
